American
Sampler Bett Butler featuring
Joël Dilley $12 (plus shipping & applicable
sales tax)
Pianist/vocalist Bett Butler and bassist/producer Joël
Dilley use all the colors in their musical palette to
paint nuanced interpretations of universal stories from
the Great American Songbook. “My Melancholy Baby”
becomes a soothing lullaby of reassurance; “I Got
Rhythm,” an exultant and childlike celebration of
romantic love; Irving Berlin’s “Say It Isn’t So” is a
world-weary plea for truth; “Witchcraft” becomes a
devilishly playful song of seduction; Cole Porter’s
“Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” is delivered with
sophisticated cynicism masking a shattered heart;
“Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?,” a timely protest
against economic injustice; and “Over the Rainbow”
becomes an affirmation of hope for a new and better
world.
"Bett
Butler’s brilliant vocals on ten classics take us
beyond Tin Pan Alley into the international realm of
the art song...Not just these sophisticated lyrics
and subtle compositions by the creators of a musical
renaissance but such masterful treatments— Butler’s
fluid voice and minimalist piano wedded seamlessly
with Joël Dilley’s lush acoustic bass—soar past
hackneyed versions and stale comparisons. Having
played together for decades, they are as close to
being psychic as married musicians can be."—Roberto
Bonazzi has written about the arts for The
New York Times, The Village Voice, Excelsior of
Mexico City, Transatlantic Review of London
and World Literature Today.
In this
collection of original songs, storyteller Butler follows
an offbeat assortment of characters: the pioneering
Expressionist artist who dreams of flying beyond the
stifling early twentieth-century domesticity demanded by
her lover in “For Gabriele;” small-town residents still
reeling from a generations-old suicide in “Secrets;” a
saucy woman demanding equal satisfaction in the bedroom
in “It Ain’t Over ‘til It’s Over,” and a celebration of
a beloved canine companion in “Angel in a Dog Suit.”
Producer Joël Dilley uses instrumentation, placement,
and effects cinematically, creating the perfect aural
mise en scène for each story, transporting the listener
from the alcohol-numbed claustrophobia of “When Love Has
Left the Room” (winner in the Jazz category of the 2006
International Songwriting Competition) to the lonely
plaza where phantom memories echo in his composition “Recuerdos.”
In original songs exploring her roots in
blues and classic R&B, Butler sketches life's lessons,
loves and losses with imagination, humor, and truth.
"Bubba's Inconvenience Store" tells of big dreams in a
small town; "Let's Talk It Over" and "Tell Me What It
Is," pleas for honesty between lovers; "I Saw You on the
Street Today," a re-telling of a Nancy Wilson's
mid-century classic with an updated ending; and
"Butterfly," the tale of a courageous young woman's
transition from this life to the next. Says Robert
Lindquist of Singer Magazine, "Bett
Butler...takes us on a jazz journey that blends a host
of styles into a sound that is meticulously constructed,
both musically and lyrically....Her poetry and vision,
combined with keyboard prowess and sterling
vocalizations, amuse and entertain track after
track....This CD is a sheer joy."
